Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to file US taxes if I live abroad?
Yes, as a US citizen or green card holder, you must file US tax returns regardless of where you live or earn income. However, you may qualify for exclusions and credits that reduce or eliminate your US tax liability.
What is the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion?
The FEIE allows qualifying US expats to exclude up to $120,000 (2023) of foreign earned income from US taxation. You must meet either the physical presence test or bona fide residence test to qualify.
Do UN employees pay US taxes?
UN salaries are generally exempt from US income tax, but UN employees must still file US tax returns and report other income. They may also have FBAR and FATCA reporting requirements.
What is FBAR and who must file it?
FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report) must be filed by US persons with foreign financial accounts exceeding $10,000 at any time during the year. It's filed separately from your tax return through FinCEN.
Can I deduct foreign taxes paid?
Yes, you can either take the Foreign Tax Credit for foreign taxes paid or deduct them as an itemized deduction. The credit is usually more beneficial as it reduces your tax dollar-for-dollar.
