Do I have to file US taxes if I live abroad?
Yes, US citizens must file tax returns regardless of where they live. However, you may qualify for exclusions and credits that reduce or eliminate your US tax liability.
What is the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion?
The FEIE allows qualifying expats to exclude up to $120,000 (2023) of foreign earned income from US taxation. You must meet either the physical presence or bona fide residence test.
When are expat tax returns due?
Expat returns are due June 15th (automatic 2-month extension), but any taxes owed are still due April 15th. You can request additional extensions if needed.
What is FBAR and who must file it?
FBAR must be filed by US persons with foreign accounts exceeding $10,000 at any time during the year. It's filed separately through FinCEN by April 15th (with automatic extension to October 15th).
Can I claim both FEIE and Foreign Tax Credit?
You cannot claim both for the same income. We analyze your situation to determine the most beneficial approach, which often involves using FEIE for earned income and FTC for other income types.
